Reassessing a Small Dancing Ganesha Bronze: Casting, Punchwork and Surface Evidence

The first impression was deceptively simple: a small, bright yellow-brown Ganesha that looked as though it might be relatively recent workshop production. Under magnification, however, the surface, cold-worked decoration and underside complicated that reading. We therefore treated the object as a technical attribution problem rather than dating it from colour or polish alone.

The object and the initial problem
The sculpture measures H 13 × W 7.5 cm and weighs 0.7 kg. Ganesha is shown in a dynamic dancing posture with one leg lifted, multiple arms carrying ritual attributes and the mouse, his vahana, incorporated at the base. The scale is consistent with a portable or domestic devotional bronze rather than a large temple image.
Nothing in the iconography by itself provides a secure date. The central problem was instead the apparent contradiction between a highly polished, gold-coloured copper alloy and physical details that looked more traditionally worked than expected for simple recent decorative casting.
Casting and construction
The figure is consistent with traditional lost-wax casting. This attribution is based on the integrated modelling, the irregularities of the cast surface, the hand-finished details and, especially, the underside. It should be understood as a technical reading from visual examination rather than a laboratory identification of the casting process.

The back is also fully modelled. Ornament, body contours and the rear of the headdress were not treated merely as an unseen surface. That level of completion is compatible with a devotional object meant to be handled and viewed in the round.

Cold work after casting
Magnification shows that a significant part of the decoration was refined after casting. Small punched dots, incised borders and engraved lines vary slightly in spacing and depth. The irregularity is important: these marks behave like individually applied cold work rather than a perfectly repeated texture formed only in the mould.

This does not make the object nineteenth century by itself. Traditional Indian workshops continued to use lost-wax casting, chasing, engraving and punching well into the twentieth century. The evidence is therefore more useful for identifying workshop practice than for fixing a narrow date.
Red oxidation, bright alloy and white deposits
The surface contains several distinct visual components. Red to reddish-brown areas occur beneath or beside the polished yellow metal. Their colour and position are consistent with copper-rich oxidation, including cuprite, but no elemental or mineralogical analysis has been carried out. We therefore describe them as visually consistent with cuprite rather than treating the identification as chemically proven.
The pale material concentrated in recesses caused particular uncertainty. At first it looked like dried polishing compound or another cleaning residue, because it survives in engraved lines and protected corners while the exposed metal is bright. That remains the most practical working explanation. The photographs alone, however, cannot distinguish polishing compound, mineral residue or another deposited material with certainty.

Does the surface show fire gilding?
We specifically considered mercury or fire gilding because some magnified areas appear to show a gold-coloured surface over redder copper-rich zones. The present evidence is insufficient to call the figure fire-gilt. A polished copper alloy can create a similar colour contrast, and the photographs do not demonstrate a discrete gold layer with certainty.
For that reason we do not describe the object as fire-gilded. Confirming gilding would require elemental analysis of protected and worn areas, ideally by non-destructive XRF, with further surface analysis if the result remained ambiguous.
Why the dating changed during examination
Our first working hypothesis was a relatively modern Indian decorative or export bronze. The bright polish and pale residue encouraged that reading. Once the underside, rear finishing and microscopic cold work were examined, that simple explanation became less satisfactory.
A nineteenth-century date was then considered. The traditional casting, irregular punching and developed oxidation make such a date possible, but they do not require it. The same workshop techniques continued into the early twentieth century, and there is not enough stylistic or technical evidence here to place the sculpture securely before 1900.
The more defensible present working attribution is therefore India, circa 1900–1950, made in a traditional workshop using lost-wax casting and hand-applied finishing. This is an estimated age range, not a laboratory date.
Working conclusion
At present we classify the object as a small Indian dancing Ganesha in copper alloy commonly described as bronze, probably dating to the first half of the twentieth century. Its construction and surface show traditional casting and substantial hand finishing rather than purely mechanical production. The reddish areas are consistent with copper oxidation; the pale deposits are most plausibly residues from polishing or cleaning but remain unidentified; and fire gilding has not been demonstrated.
The examination is useful precisely because the first visual impression was misleading. A bright, polished surface does not automatically make a bronze recent, but traditional casting and old-looking oxidation do not automatically make it nineteenth century either. Here the safest attribution is the one that preserves that distinction between what we can see and what still requires instrumental analysis.
