Buddha-Statues.com is dedicated to antique and collectible Buddhist sculpture from across Asia, with a particular focus on Buddha statues in bronze, wood and stone.
Our experience with Asian objects extends across three decades. What began in the Amsterdam art trade developed into a much broader search for Buddhist sculpture, taking us through European collections and along historic trading routes connecting Europe, Central Asia and the cultures of the Silk Road.
Today our purpose is straightforward: to identify interesting Buddhist objects, document what can reasonably be established about them and present them clearly to collectors around the world.

From Amsterdam to the Silk Road
Our foundations lie in the Amsterdam art trade. Exposure to antiques, decorative arts and historic objects gradually developed into a more specialised interest in Asian religious sculpture.
The search later moved considerably further east. Years spent working from Central Asia created a different perspective on the movement of objects between cultures and on the historic networks that once connected China, Tibet, the Himalayas, India and Europe.
That experience reinforced something that remains fundamental to our approach today: objects should be examined individually. Similar-looking sculptures can differ considerably in period, workshop tradition, casting method, material and historical significance.
Research Before Attribution
Attribution in Buddhist sculpture is rarely established by a single feature. We therefore look at multiple aspects of an object before drawing conclusions about its possible origin, date or workshop tradition.
Where relevant, this includes the physical construction of the sculpture, casting characteristics, tool marks, surface condition, surviving gilding, inscriptions, iconography and stylistic comparison.
Magnification and microscopic examination may also be used when surface details warrant closer inspection. These observations can provide useful evidence, but no single technical characteristic is treated as automatic proof of age or origin.

Buddhist Sculpture Across Asia
Buddhist sculpture developed differently across the many cultures that adopted Buddhism. Rather than treating “Asian Buddha statues” as one category, we organise objects by the traditions in which they were created.
Particular attention is given to sculpture from Southeast Asia and the Himalayan regions, alongside Chinese Buddhist traditions.
Objects Presented for Collectors
Every sculpture is presented as an individual object rather than simply as part of a decorative product catalogue.
Wherever the information is available, listings record dimensions, weight, material, condition, iconography, proposed origin and attribution. Significant works may receive substantially more extensive catalogue notes and research documentation.
Attribution is stated according to the available evidence. Uncertainty is retained where uncertainty exists. Later pieces can be interesting objects in their own right, and an old surface alone is never used as a substitute for proper identification.
Condition & Historical Surfaces
Wear, losses, old repairs, oxidation, devotional handling and surviving decoration are part of the history of Buddhist sculpture. We therefore prefer to describe relevant condition features rather than disguise them.
