Authenticity & Our Approach
Buddha-Statues.com focuses on antique and collectible Buddhist sculpture from across Asia. Every object is assessed individually before it is offered for sale.
Object-Based Assessment
Our descriptions are based on the physical characteristics of the sculpture itself: material, casting or carving technique, iconography, surface, patina, wear, construction, repairs, inscriptions, seals and other observable features.
Where a period, region or cultural attribution is given, it reflects our considered assessment of the available evidence. Attribution in historical art is sometimes a matter of informed judgement rather than absolute certainty, and our catalogue language is written accordingly.
Examination Methods
When relevant, objects may be examined under magnification and with ultraviolet light to study surface layers, gilding, coatings, repairs, deposits and other material characteristics that are not always visible to the naked eye.
These methods support visual and material assessment, but they are not presented as a substitute for laboratory analysis when scientific testing would be required for a definitive conclusion.
Condition & Age
Antique Buddhist sculpture is expected to show evidence of age and use. Patina, abrasion, minor losses, old repairs, casting irregularities, drying cracks, oxidation and ritual wear can all form part of an object's history.
We aim to describe significant condition issues clearly and to provide detailed photographs so that buyers can assess the object before purchase.
Research & Comparison
Where appropriate, our assessment may also consider published museum examples, auction records, stylistic parallels and established iconographic references. Comparative material is used as supporting context, not as automatic proof of date or origin.
Transparency
We do not describe an object as older, rarer or more specific in origin than the available evidence reasonably supports. If an attribution remains uncertain, the wording of the catalogue entry is intended to reflect that uncertainty.
