Catalogue Note
A substantial 19th-century Thai Buddha seated in Bhumisparsha Mudra, the earth-touching gesture associated with the moment of enlightenment. The serene face, snail-shell curls and geometric robe folds are characteristic of Rattanakosin sculpture. The figure sits on a lotus pedestal decorated with repeated heart-shaped motifs.
The cast-bronze surface retains extensive remnants of mercury fire gilding, accompanied by natural black and green patina, oxidation and ritual wear. The sealed cavity in the underside still retains its historic ritual contents, documenting the sculpture's former temple use and consecrated function.
Iconography and Context
Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.
Condition and Display
Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 11 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.
