This substantial Nepalese bronze depicts Shakyamuni Buddha seated in meditation, with the right hand lowered in Bhumisparsha Mudra. The gesture marks the moment the Buddha called the earth to witness his enlightenment.
The finely engraved robe, elegant lotus base and clearly defined facial features reflect Nepal's long bronze-casting tradition. A natural patina and minor age-related wear complement the sculpture's calm, balanced presence.
Iconography and Context
Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.
