A monumental Newari San Jhya architectural frame incorporating a central seated Buddha in bhumisparsha mudra and flanking makara. The carved Buddhist core is attributed to the 19th century and was incorporated into a renewed structural frame in Nepal before export in the 1960s.
Provenance
Seller documentation places the portal in a private German collection from approximately 1965. This early collection history is important provenance information, although it should not be treated by itself as a complete legal determination for every jurisdiction.
Construction and condition
Traditional teak joinery, deep hand carving and an old stable patina remain visible. The object combines older sculptural components with the 20th-century structural intervention and should be understood as a historic architectural ensemble rather than an untouched single-period object.
