Burmese bronze Buddha

This seated Buddha has a calm, refined expression and displays the Bhumisparsha Mudra, with the right hand reaching down in the earth-touching gesture. A tall flame-shaped ushnisha rises above tightly arranged hair curls, while traces of gold remain around the head, face and neck.

The figure rests on an ornate pedestal with deeply modelled openwork decoration. The dark bronze surface carries natural patina and age-related wear, and the underside remains sealed. Together, the balanced pose, detailed pedestal and substantial scale give the sculpture a strong devotional presence.

Iconography and Context

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.

Condition and Display

The bronze surface shows the tonal variation, patina and raised-detail wear described in the catalogue note. The 10 photographs document the sculpture from multiple angles, including the reverse and base.
