A Four-Armed Newar Bodhisattva Under Magnification: What the Casting, Gilding and Lotus Base Reveal

The most useful evidence on this sculpture did not come from the front. When we turned the figure over and examined the junction between the deity and its lotus throne, the construction became clearer: the figure and pedestal were made as separate cast components and subsequently assembled. That observation is more useful for the technical reading of the object than surface colour alone.

Our present working attribution is a four-armed gilt Vajrayana bodhisattva in the Newar tradition of the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, probably 18th–19th century. Avalokiteshvara remains the leading iconographic possibility, but the precise manifestation is not treated as settled.
The iconography is strong, but not completely closed
The sculpture shows a slender crowned bodhisattva seated cross-legged on a broad lotus throne. Four arms extend around the body. The crown incorporates a small seated Buddha, an important clue: if that figure is securely identified as Amitabha, it strongly supports an Avalokiteshvara attribution. Lotus imagery points in the same direction.
Earlier in the examination we considered specific identifications for several hand-held objects, including a skull cup, lamp and other explicitly tantric implements. The photographs do not justify treating all of those readings as established facts. The surviving attributes are unusual enough that a specific esoteric form should be assigned only after every object and hand position can be matched iconographically.
This also separates the sculpture from the familiar standard four-armed Avalokiteshvara configuration in which the principal hands are joined at the heart and the secondary hands carry a lotus and rosary. For the present study, the more defensible designation is four-armed Newar Vajrayana bodhisattva, probably within the Avalokiteshvara iconographic family.
The face records more than one surface history

At normal scale the face reads as golden. Under magnification it becomes heterogeneous. We recorded discontinuous remnants of the gold-coloured surface, exposed copper-alloy substrate, minute dark points and pits, reddish-brown alteration in recesses, and abrasion concentrated on raised facial features.


The distribution matters. Projecting areas received more contact and abrasion, while gilding survives more effectively in protected recesses. We therefore see a layered, location-dependent surface rather than a uniformly distressed coating.
What microscopy can say about the gilding
The surviving gold-coloured surface is consistent with historical Himalayan fire gilding. Magnification shows remnants embedded in recesses and microscopic irregularities beside areas worn back toward the copper alloy.
Microscopy, however, does not chemically prove the use of mercury. An earlier working text described mercurial fire gilding as confirmed from the photographs; that went beyond the evidence. Definitive identification would require elemental analysis such as XRF. We therefore describe the surface as consistent with historical fire gilding, not laboratory-confirmed mercury gilding.

Reddish alteration: compatible with cuprite, not identified as cuprite
Several microscopic views show reddish to reddish-brown material beside the remaining gilt surface. Cuprite is a plausible copper corrosion product for such colouring, and an earlier interpretation named it directly. Colour photography is not mineralogical analysis, so that identification has been corrected.

The evidential value lies less in naming a mineral than in the relationship between the altered metal, remaining surface treatment and exposed substrate. These layers occupy different physical zones and follow the relief of the sculpture.
The line at the waist led us to the construction

The wider photographs resolve the question. The deity and the lotus pedestal were separately cast and subsequently joined. The junction runs beneath the crossed legs at the upper platform of the throne and belongs to the manufacturing sequence rather than being sufficient evidence of a later repair.

Multi-part manufacture is compatible with traditional lost-wax production of complex Himalayan copper-alloy sculpture. It does not by itself date the object, because separate casting continued over long periods. Here it becomes more persuasive because it agrees with the extensive post-casting chasing, irregular surface structure, aged gilding and hand-worked ornament.
The upper rim of the lotus platform carries repeated tooling. The petals have been individually articulated, and the garment above the throne is covered with dense punched, engraved and raised floral decoration. The final appearance was therefore not produced by the mould alone; substantial cold working and chasing followed casting.
The underside sets a limit on what we can claim

An earlier report described the base as retaining an intact consecration and original ritual contents. The photographs do not establish that. Himalayan sculptures could be consecrated with texts, relic substances and other deposits, but a historically worked or apparently closed underside is not enough to prove that original contents remain untouched. No such claim is retained in this article.
Material: what is observed and what remains untested
The exposed surfaces, corrosion behaviour and overall appearance are consistent with a copper-based alloy. “Bronze” remains a useful catalogue term, but we did not chemically determine the proportions of copper, tin, zinc, lead or other elements. The material is therefore recorded as gilt copper alloy / bronze, not as a quantified copper-tin composition.
No XRF or metallographic analysis is documented for this investigation. Nor is there a documented UV, acetone, acid or other diagnostic test result for this particular object in the examination record used here. Those tests are therefore not imported from research on other sculptures.
No inscription, Nepalese export seal or documented early provenance is visible in the photographs examined for this article.
Why the Newar attribution remains the strongest
The Nepalese attribution does not rest on a seal. It rests on the combination of sculptural and technical features: elegant elongated proportions, elaborate jewelled bodhisattva ornament, sophisticated multi-armed Vajrayana iconography, dense chasing, the treatment of the crown and face, gilt copper-alloy manufacture, and the separately constructed lotus throne.
No individual feature proves Kathmandu Valley manufacture. Together they support a Newar attribution as the present working conclusion.
Dating after the corrections
An earlier assessment placed the sculpture in the 17th–18th century. After reviewing the full construction and keeping the evidential limits explicit, we retain the broader and slightly later range of 18th–19th century.
This is not an exact scientific date. Surface wear, gilding and construction can support historical manufacture but cannot supply a calendar year. There is no dated inscription or secure early provenance in the present record. A narrower range would require stronger comparative, documentary or analytical evidence.
Working conclusion
We handled a complex four-armed gilt copper-alloy bodhisattva with extensive hand chasing. Under magnification the surface shows non-uniform wear, residual gilding, exposed substrate and reddish-brown alteration. The figure and lotus throne were produced separately and assembled, and the pedestal was substantially worked after casting.
The sculpture fits the technical and stylistic vocabulary of Newar Buddhist metalwork from the Kathmandu Valley. Its precise esoteric identity remains open. Avalokiteshvara is the strongest working identification, especially if the small Buddha in the crown can be securely identified as Amitabha, but the unusual arrangement of attributes prevents us from treating a specific manifestation as settled.
