A Seated Tara from Java? What the Halo, Casting and Open Base Reveal

The first useful correction came when we turned the sculpture over. From the front, the figure reads as a richly adorned female Buddhist deity seated on a broad lotus pedestal, framed by a large openwork aureole and accompanied by a vegetal or lotus attribute. From below, the construction is unambiguous: the pedestal is open and the figure is hollow-cast. That immediately corrected an earlier catalogue description of the object as “solid bronze”.

Why Tara became the preferred identification

Our first notes did not settle the deity correctly. Avalokiteshvara was considered early in the discussion, but the complete figure pushed the identification in another direction. The torso is distinctly feminine, with a narrow waist and exposed breasts, while the deity wears the crown, necklaces, arm ornaments and other jewellery of an adorned bodhisattva. A long vegetal stem rises beside the body and appears to have interacted with one of the hands.

Tara therefore became the strongest working identification. The combination of a female bodhisattva body, princely ornaments and a lotus-related attribute fits that reading better than the earlier Avalokiteshvara hypothesis. We have nevertheless left the attribution open enough to acknowledge a close iconographic differential: other female Buddhist deities, particularly Prajnaparamita, can share parts of this visual vocabulary in Indonesian sculpture.

The hand gesture should not be over-described

An earlier description called the right-hand position Dhyana Mudra. We would no longer catalogue it that way. Several fingers and attributes are damaged or incomplete, and the surviving configuration is not sufficient to reconstruct a conventional mudra with confidence. The seated posture is clear; the exact ritual hand gesture is not.

This is a useful distinction in object research. A mudra should be identified from the actual configuration of palm and fingers, not inferred because a deity is seated in meditation.

A Javanese visual language, but not automatically a Javanese date

The strongest regional argument comes from form rather than corrosion. The figure has a long, restrained torso, a very narrow waist, an upright seated posture and concentrated ornament around the crown, necklaces and arm jewellery. The lotus pedestal is broad and comparatively controlled in its petal pattern, while the face is softly modelled rather than heavily articulated. The openwork aureole and the way the ornament sits around an otherwise uncluttered body also belong comfortably within a classical Javanese Buddhist visual language.

That does not allow us to turn style into a century. During the study, comparison with securely attributed Javanese Buddhist bronzes showed that many of the closest classical models are substantially earlier than the provisional 17th–18th-century date with which we began. A later workshop can preserve, revive or copy an older sacred model. Conversely, an early-looking form cannot simply be promoted to an archaeological date without provenance or technical evidence.

For that reason, our current catalogue language is deliberately narrower: Indonesia, probably Java, in the classical Javanese Buddhist tradition. The date remains a research question rather than a settled label.

The aureole records a separate history of damage and repair

The aureole is not just decorative framing. From the front it produces the expected devotional presentation around the crown. From behind, its condition is much less idealised. The openwork structure is distorted in places, sections are fractured or incomplete, and the rear surface is rougher than the visible face.

This difference between front and rear is useful. The object was made to be read primarily from the front. The back preserves working irregularities and a more complicated structural history. We cannot establish from photographs when every repair or intervention was made, so we do not describe the aureole as untouched or entirely original in its present configuration.

The surface is not a single uniform patina

The exterior contains several different surface states. Dark brown to nearly black patination dominates much of the sculpture. Warmer exposed copper-alloy areas appear where the surface has been abraded. Green copper corrosion occurs locally, while yellow-gold material survives around parts of the face, jewellery and other protected details.

Those gold-coloured remnants are consistent with an earlier gilded surface. They are not sufficient to identify the process as mercury or fire gilding. No compositional analysis of the gold layer has been performed on this object, so the article deliberately stops at “remnants of gilding”.

The wear is similarly uneven. Projecting areas have lost more of their surface than recesses, while corrosion and darker material remain concentrated in sheltered zones. This distribution is consistent with a long material history, but surface appearance alone cannot provide a calendar date.

The open underside is the strongest construction evidence

The underside resolves several questions that the frontal photographs cannot. A wide opening exposes the interior of the pedestal and proves that the sculpture is hollow-cast. Turquoise-green copper corrosion extends well inside the object, together with dark brown and reddish oxidation. More yellow-toned alloy remains visible in protected interior areas. An irregular central opening or core-related feature is also present.

This matters because the corrosion history is not confined to a cosmetically visible exterior. At the same time, it would be a mistake to use the green interior as proof of a specific archaeological age. Copper alloys can mineralise under many environmental conditions. Without alloy analysis, corrosion-product identification or secure archaeological context, the underside supports genuine material ageing but does not prove an eighth-, twelfth- or eighteenth-century date.

What we deliberately did not import from another investigation

This study took place in the same research sequence as a different, much larger standing Buddhist bronze. That other object was examined with Dino-Lite microscopy and was subjected to additional discussion involving acetone, a wooden base closure and an old iron fixing. Those observations do not belong to this seated Tara and have not been used as evidence here.

For the present figure, the secure dossier consists of the object photographs, close surface photographs, side and rear views, examination of the aureole and the open underside. We currently have no XRF alloy analysis, no inscription, no export seal, no documented excavation history and no secure provenance linking the sculpture to a dated collection.

Where the attribution stands now

After correcting the early assumptions, we would presently describe the sculpture as:

Tara is the preferred identification, but not an absolute one. The Javanese relationship is stronger than the precise dating. What remains unresolved is whether the sculpture is a relatively late continuation or revival of an older Javanese Buddhist model, or whether the object itself is substantially earlier than the working date first proposed.

An XRF reading would be a sensible next step because it could establish the copper, tin, zinc and lead proportions of the alloy. It would not produce a date by itself, but it could test whether the metal composition is compatible with the chronological and regional scenarios under consideration.

For now, the most useful conclusion is also the most restrained: the sculpture can be placed convincingly within a Javanese Buddhist stylistic family, while its exact date and final iconographic attribution still require evidence beyond photography alone.
