Early Japanese meditation Buddha

This compact Japanese Buddha is cast in solid bronze and has an unusually substantial weight for its size. The figure sits with both hands resting in meditation, while the robe folds frame the torso in a restrained, balanced composition.

The surface shows deep natural wear from centuries of handling and devotional use, especially around the head, shoulders and raised areas. The underside carries stamped marks associated with its import into The Hague around 1900. No modern restoration or artificial ageing is present.

Iconography and Context

Dhyana Mudra places both hands in the lap and expresses concentration, balance and meditative absorption. Its symmetry reinforces the sculpture’s calm, inward-looking presence.

Condition and Display

The solid bronze surface shows the tonal variation, patina and raised-detail wear described in the catalogue note. The 11 photographs document the sculpture from multiple angles, including the reverse and base.
