This Nepalese gilt bronze depicts the Buddha seated in Vitarka Mudra, with the right thumb and index finger joined in the gesture associated with teaching, discussion and the transmission of wisdom.

The robe is richly engraved with floral and animal motifs, demonstrating the detailed metalwork of Nepalese Buddhist sculpture. Surviving gilding and a natural patina give the compact figure depth and character.
