This 19th-century Thai bronze depicts the Buddha seated in the lotus position, with the right hand reaching down in Bhumisparsha Mudra and the left hand resting in the lap. The earth-touching gesture represents the moment of enlightenment.
The serene expression, smooth modelling and finely worked lotus pedestal show careful lost-wax casting. A rich patina, natural oxidation and old clay traces at the base give the sculpture depth and historical character.
Iconography and Context
Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.
