Catalogue Note

Height: 29 cm
Weight: 1.4 kg
Material: Carved teak with gilding and lacquer traces
Origin: Burma / Myanmar
Dating: Attributed to the 19th century
Mudra: Bhumisparsha Mudra

A compact Burmese Buddha carved from teak and seated in the earth-touching gesture. The warm worn gilding and dark lacquer traces preserve the devotional character associated with older Burmese wooden temple images.

The surface displays natural wood ageing and long-term wear. The 19th-century date remains an art-historical attribution based on the current catalogue record.

Condition

Antique condition with gilt loss, cracks, patina and normal wear to the carved wood.

Iconography and Context

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.

Condition and Display

Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 12 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.
