Catalogue Note

An antique Burmese Jambupati Buddha in the royal Mandalay tradition, dating to approximately 1890 and standing 57 cm high. The richly treated wooden figure combines gilding with inlaid eyes, presenting the Buddha in regal rather than monastic form.

The Jambupati form

Jambupati imagery shows the Buddha adorned as a universal monarch, using crown and royal ornament to express spiritual sovereignty. This Burmese example carries the opulent surface treatment and strong frontal presence associated with late 19th-century Mandalay work.

Iconography and Context

The composed posture and restrained expression belong to the visual language of Buddhist devotional sculpture. Balance, stillness and clearly readable gestures allow the image to function both as a sacred object and as a focused sculptural presence.

Condition and Display

The carved carved wood with gilding and inlaid eyes retains visible grain, tool-work and naturally varied colour. The 16 photographs document the carving, profiles, reverse and age-related surface character as part of the condition assessment.
