An antique Burmese Buddha carved in wood and decorated with traditional mirror-glass inlay. The figure sits in bhumisparsha mudra, with the right hand reaching toward the earth and the left resting in the lap.

Surface & Condition

The darkened timber, red lacquer beneath the base and surviving mirrored decoration give the object its characteristic Burmese appearance. Wear to projecting areas and minor losses are retained as part of the historic surface. Good antique condition with natural timber movement, patina and age-related wear.

Iconography and Context

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.

Condition and Display

The carved carved wood with lacquer and glass inlay retains visible grain, tool-work and naturally varied colour. The 10 photographs document the carving, profiles, reverse and age-related surface character as part of the condition assessment.
