Catalogue Note

A large antique Burmese Mandalay Buddha carved in teak and retaining layers of traditional lacquer and historic gilding. Dating to approximately 1870–1895, during the late Konbaung period, the figure is seated in bhumisparsha mudra and measures 63.5 cm high.

Late Konbaung / Mandalay style

The softly modelled face, elongated earlobes, carefully worked hair and decorated monastic robe are characteristic of the refined Buddha imagery associated with 19th-century Mandalay. The earth-touching gesture identifies the moment of Shakyamuni’s enlightenment.

Teak, thit-si lacquer and gilding

The sculpture is carved from teak and finished with traditional Burmese lacquer and surviving gold-leaf decoration. Wear has exposed darker underlying layers in places, creating a naturally varied surface. The reverse includes an open recess or cavity visible in the photographs; no specific original contents are asserted.

Condition

Good antique condition with age-related cracking, wear, small surface losses and uneven gilding. Hand-working marks and natural timber movement remain visible, consistent with an older carved wooden devotional image.
