Catalogue Note
A compact antique Burmese Mandalay Buddha carved in teak and decorated with thayo lacquer work, mirror-glass inlay and surviving gilding. Dating to around 1880–1920, the seated figure measures 27 cm high and retains decoration around both the front and reverse.
Iconography and Mandalay style
The Buddha is represented in bhumisparsha mudra, with the right hand lowered toward the earth. The refined facial expression, tiered robe decoration and glittering glass details are characteristic of Burmese devotional sculpture associated with the Mandalay tradition.
Wood, lacquer and glass
The sculpture is carved in teak with raised lacquer decoration and small mirror-glass elements. Worn gilding reveals darker lacquer layers beneath, producing a naturally varied historic surface. The decorated reverse makes the piece suitable for viewing from multiple angles.
Condition
Antique condition with age-related surface wear, small losses, cracking and wear to gilding and glass. The underside retains an old red lacquer surface and hand-working marks.
