Catalogue Note

Dimensions: H 64 × W 54 cm | Origin: Myanmar | Period: ca. 1880–1920

A large carved-wood Mandalay Buddha seated in bhumisparsha mudra. The figure retains warm gilding over traditional red lacquer and inset eyes that give the face the characteristic intensity of Burmese devotional sculpture.

Iconography

The earth-touching gesture refers to Shakyamuni's enlightenment. Mandalay sculpture often combines soft facial modelling with rich surface treatment and a strong frontal presentation.

Condition

Historic wear to gilding and lacquer, visible age-related surface variation and old wood movement. The inset eyes and much of the decorative finish remain present.

Iconography and Context

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.

Condition and Display

The carved wood retains visible grain, tool-work and naturally varied colour. The 9 photographs document the carving, profiles, reverse and age-related surface character as part of the condition assessment.
