A richly decorated Burmese Mandalay Buddha carved from wood and finished with gilding and inset glass. The sculpture is fully worked around the back and retains the ornate visual language associated with late Burmese temple art.

Iconography

The Buddha is seated in bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture linked to the enlightenment of Shakyamuni.

Condition

The gilt surface shows natural rubbing and darker exposed layers, with age-related wear to the glass decoration and wood. The historic surface has been retained rather than cosmetically refinished.

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.

Condition and Display

The carved wood retains visible grain, tool-work and naturally varied colour. The 9 photographs document the carving, profiles, reverse and age-related surface character as part of the condition assessment.
