Surface & Condition

Gold leaf survives over darker lacquer layers, with mirror elements concentrated along the head and robe. Natural drying cracks and worn high points record the movement and use of the timber over time. Antique condition with losses, rubbing, patina and age-related cracks; the historic surface remains visually coherent.

Iconography and Context

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.

Condition and Display

The carved carved wood, lacquer, gilding and glass inlay retains visible grain, tool-work and naturally varied colour. The 13 photographs document the carving, profiles, reverse and age-related surface character as part of the condition assessment.
