Catalogue Note

Dimensions: H 52.5 × W 38.8 cm | Weight: 7 kg | Origin: Myanmar | Period: ca. 1880–1920

A substantial Mandalay Buddha with a warm gilt surface and decorative glass inlay across the robe. The soft facial modelling and elaborate textile treatment are characteristic of Burmese devotional carving from the late 19th to early 20th century.

Iconography

The Buddha is seated in bhumisparsha mudra, touching the earth as witness to enlightenment.

Condition

Age-related rubbing to gilding, local glass losses, darkened exposed wood and normal wear to raised areas. The underside retains visible wood structure and older surface treatment.

Iconography and Context

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.

Condition and Display

The carved wood retains visible grain, tool-work and naturally varied colour. The 10 photographs document the carving, profiles, reverse and age-related surface character as part of the condition assessment.
