Catalogue Note

Dimensions: H 51 × W 40 cm | Weight: 8.4 kg | Origin: Myanmar | Period: ca. 1880–1920

A substantial carved-wood Mandalay Buddha retaining a warm gilt surface, red lacquer underlayer and small mirror-glass details. The scale and weight give the image the presence of an altar sculpture rather than a small decorative carving.

Iconography

Shakyamuni is seated in bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture of enlightenment.

Condition

Old wear to gilding and lacquer, natural wood movement and age-related surface losses. One hand is detached but present and accompanies the sculpture. An old collection number survives beneath the base.

Iconography and Context

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.

Condition and Display

The carved wood retains visible grain, tool-work and naturally varied colour. The 15 photographs document the carving, profiles, reverse and age-related surface character as part of the condition assessment.
