A strongly weathered wooden Shan Buddha with an elongated flame finial, stylised hands and a restrained meditative expression. Old lacquer remnants and a dry, uneven wood surface give the sculpture a particularly austere character.

Iconography

The Buddha sits in Bhumisparsha Mudra, the earth-touching gesture of enlightenment.

Dating and condition

The sculpture is attributed broadly to the 18th–19th century. Beneath the base are an old inventory marking and a lead collection/export seal. The wood shows extensive wear, old cracks, lacquer loss and natural ageing.

Iconography and Context

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.

Condition and Display

The carved wood retains visible grain, tool-work and naturally varied colour. The 11 photographs document the carving, profiles, reverse and age-related surface character as part of the condition assessment.
