Object Details

Catalogue Note

A tall 19th-century Burmese standing Buddha carved in hardwood and decorated with historic gilding, lacquer relief and mirror-glass inlay. Measuring 77 cm high, the sculpture is associated with the late Konbaung and Mandalay traditions of Myanmar.

Mandalay Buddhist sculpture

The elongated standing form, serene facial expression and richly ornamented robe belong to the decorative language of 19th-century Burmese Buddhist sculpture. Small mirror-glass elements set into raised lacquer decoration catch the light around the robe and headband, contrasting with the worn gold-toned surface.

Wood, lacquer and glass

The figure is hand carved from hardwood and finished with traditional lacquer layers, surviving gilding and mirror-glass inlay. Age-related wear has exposed darker lacquer and underlying wood in places, creating a naturally varied historic surface.

Condition

Antique condition with shrinkage cracks, surface wear, small losses to gilding and glass, and naturally aged lacquer. These features are visible in the photographs and are retained as part of the sculpture’s historic character.
