A small Burmese temple disciple carved from solid teak and shown kneeling with hands joined in anjali. Such attendant figures were placed in devotional settings around larger Buddha images and embody reverence rather than independent deity worship.

Carving & Surface

The figure was cut from a single timber block. Dark lacquer remains beneath worn gold leaf, and hand-tool marks are visible on less finished areas. The exact identity of the disciple is not documented, so the catalogue retains the broader and more defensible description temple disciple.

Condition

Antique condition with rubbing, small losses, lacquer wear and natural timber ageing. No attempt has been made to disguise the historical surface.

Iconography and Context

Anjali Mudra joins the hands before the chest as a gesture of reverence, greeting and spiritual humility. In a kneeling figure, the gesture creates an especially focused image of devotion.

Condition and Display

Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 12 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.
