A compact but notably heavy Chinese figure of Budai, seated in a relaxed posture and modelled with the broad smile and exposed belly characteristic of the subject. The 1.4 kg weight gives the 16.5 cm sculpture a substantial physical presence.

Construction & Surface

The hand-finished casting has thick, irregular walls and a warm brown-gold surface with darker deposits in recesses. Wear is concentrated on projecting details. These observations are consistent with an older devotional or domestic object while avoiding claims that patina alone can prove chronology.

Condition

Good antique condition with patina, small surface irregularities and normal wear. No aggressive polishing has been undertaken, allowing the aged metal surface to remain legible.
