A seated Chinese Buddha with the right hand in Vitarka Mudra, the gesture associated with teaching and discussion of the Dharma. The sculpture retains a closed underside, dark aged patina and surviving gilt traces in protected areas.

An old lacquer or wax marking with stamped impressions is present on the head. Its exact purpose and text have not been established; it may relate to later handling, trade or collection history and is not treated as a dynastic mark.
