A crowned Himalayan Bodhisattva standing with the hands joined in Namaskara Mudra. The reverse of the robe carries hand-incised cloud and flame-like decoration.
Identification
The figure has previously been called Kwan Yin/Avalokiteshvara, but the surviving attributes described in the record are not sufficient for a fully secure identification. It is therefore catalogued more cautiously as a Bodhisattva.
Attribution and Condition
The sculpture is attributed to Ladakh / the Western Himalaya in the 18th century. Surviving gilding, mineral deposits, casting seams and aged oxidation are documented characteristics, not stand-alone proof of the proposed date.
Iconography and Context
The joined hands express reverence and devotion, while the crown and jewellery identify the figure as a bodhisattva rather than a monastic Buddha image.
Condition and Display
Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 10 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.
