An elegant standing Green Tara (Syama Tara) in a pronounced tribhanga pose, richly ornamented with crown, jewellery, chased textile patterns and lotus stems rising beside the shoulders.
Iconography
The right hand is lowered in Varada Mudra and the left is raised near the heart. The figure belongs to the Himalayan Tara tradition shaped by Nepalese and Pala-derived models.
Dating and condition
The sculpture is attributed to the late 18th or early 19th century. The surface combines dark brown patina with surviving gilt areas and local copper oxidation. Casting-core material is visible through openings in the sculpture, but this alone is not used as proof of date.
Iconography and Context
Varada Mudra is the lowered open-hand gesture of generosity, compassion and the granting of blessings. It is frequently used for bodhisattvas whose iconography centres on active aid.
Condition and Display
Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 9 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.
