Catalogue Note

Dimensions: H 40 × W 28.5 cm
Weight: 5 kg
Material: Copper-based bronze with traces of original fire gilding
Period: 18th–19th century
Origin: Ladakh, Western Himalayas
Subject: Je Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelug tradition

Je Tsongkhapa is seated in a composed teaching posture on a lotus base, with paired lotus flowers rising beside the shoulders. The monastic hat, teaching gesture and calm expression identify the Tibetan Buddhist master at the centre of the Gelug tradition.

Casting and surface

The hollow-cast bronze was finished by hand. Traces of original fire gilding remain across the figure, while hand-punched decoration is visible on the hands, feet and robes. The varied lotus petals and engraved details retain the character of traditional workshop finishing.

Condition

Good overall condition, with natural wear, surface rubbing and localised loss of gilding consistent with age and devotional handling. The final photograph shows the open underside and rough casting interior.
