Catalogue Note

Dimensions: H 12 × W 7.4 cm
Weight: 300 g
Material: Bronze
Estimated period: c. 1780–1870
Origin: Ladakh, Western Himalaya
Subject: Seated Buddha
Mudra: Bhumisparsha Mudra

A compact bronze Buddha seated on a single-lotus base, with the right hand lowered in the earth-touching gesture and the left hand resting in the lap.

The surface shows natural wear and mineral accretions. The open underside reveals a coarse, irregular casting interior with areas of green copper oxidation. The c. 1780–1870 dating is retained as the current art-historical attribution.

Iconography and Context

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.

Condition and Display

The bronze surface shows tonal variation, patina and raised-detail wear. The 9 photographs document the sculpture from multiple angles, including the reverse and base.
