Catalogue Note

Dimensions: H 29 × W 16 cm | Material: bronze | Period: probably ca. 1880–1920

A vertical Buddhist relief centred on the meditating Buddha protected by the naga Muchalinda. Smaller figures, animals and architectural details fill the surrounding registers.

Iconography

Muchalinda is the serpent king who shelters the Buddha during a storm after enlightenment. The relief uses a Pala- and Himalayan-inspired visual vocabulary rather than the more familiar Southeast Asian freestanding naga form.

Condition and attribution

Dark aged patina with corrosion, wear and material loss toward the lower section. The piece is most cautiously described as a late 19th- to early 20th-century workshop or revival casting in an older Himalayan style.

Iconography and Context

The composed posture and restrained expression belong to the visual language of Buddhist devotional sculpture. Balance, stillness and clearly readable gestures allow the image to function both as a sacred object and as a focused sculptural presence.

Condition and Display

The bronze | surface shows the tonal variation, patina and raised-detail wear described in the catalogue note. The 12 photographs document the sculpture from multiple angles, including the reverse and base.
