Catalogue Note

Dimensions: H 28.5 × W 19 cm
Weight: 3.8 kg
Material: Hollow-cast bronze with traces of 24k fire gilding
Period: 17th–18th century
Origin: Nepal, Himalayan Newar tradition
Mudra: Vitarka Mudra

This seated Buddha raises the right hand in the teaching gesture while the left rests open in the lap. The figure sits on a single lotus pedestal, with engraved robe borders and geometric workshop symbols integrated into the hands, arm and legs.

Newar casting and surface

The sculpture was produced by the lost-wax process in a Himalayan Newar atelier. Traces of original fire gilding survive in protected recesses beneath a naturally developed dark patina. The hand-finished ornament and varied surface retain the character of pre-industrial devotional casting.

Condition and construction

The bronze is hollow-cast. The final photograph shows the open underside with its non-uniform casting texture, layered oxidation and mineral deposits. Natural wear is visible throughout; no modern coating or restoration is apparent in the photographed concealed areas.
