Catalogue Note

Dimensions: H 24.5 × W 8.5 cm | Weight: 400 g | Origin: Northern Thailand | Period: 19th century

A small hand-carved Lanna Buddha made from a single piece of teak, retaining areas of red lacquer and older gilding. The long flame finial, compact body and devotional surface are characteristic of Northern Thai wooden temple sculpture.

Iconography

The Buddha is seated in bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture associated with the enlightenment of Shakyamuni.

Condition

Historic surface with worn gilding, lacquer losses, shrinkage cracks and an old repair at the rear of the base. The wear is consistent with an object that has had a long functional life.

Iconography and Context

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.

Condition and Display

The carved wood retains visible grain, tool-work and naturally varied colour. The 7 photographs document the carving, profiles, reverse and age-related surface character as part of the condition assessment.

Collector’s Note

A antique northern thai lanna buddha – gilt teak, 19th century with compact, display-friendly scale, combining its northern thailand | character with clearly readable sculptural detail.
