Object Details

Catalogue Note

Larger figure: H 21 × W 12 cm, 540 g
Smaller figure: H 19 × W 9 cm, 400 g
Material: Gilt bronze / copper alloy
Tradition: Himalayan / Tibetan Buddhist
Dating: Attributed to the 19th century or earlier

A matched pair representing Sahasrabhuja Avalokiteshvara, the multi-armed form of the Bodhisattva of compassion. Their multiple heads and radiating arms embody Avalokiteshvara's ability to perceive suffering and respond in many directions.

The present catalogue record previously assigned a much earlier 13th–14th-century date, but the available evidence does not justify that precision. The pair is therefore conservatively catalogued as 19th century or earlier pending stronger comparative or scientific documentation.

The surfaces retain gilding, fine chased details, dark oxidation and closed bases.

Condition

Antique condition with gilt wear, patina and minor age-related surface marks.

Iconography and Context

Guanyin, Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig is the bodhisattva of compassion. Crown, lotus, vase and hand gestures vary by region, but the subject consistently embodies attentive mercy and aid.

Condition and Display

Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 16 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.

Collector’s Note

A antique pair of sahasrabhuja avalokiteshvara with balanced display presence, combining its himalayan / tibetan buddhist gilt bronze / copper alloy character with clearly readable sculptural detail.
