Catalogue Note

Dimensions: H 35 × W 20 cm | Weight: 3.0 kg | Region: Shan / northern Myanmar–Thailand borderlands | Attribution: ca. 1850–1880

A substantial seated Shan Buddha with elongated features, pointed ushnisha and a deep chocolate-brown bronze patina.

Iconography

The Buddha sits in bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture associated with enlightenment.

Base and condition

An old bronze base plate remains closed. Its contents have not been opened or independently verified, so no claim is made about surviving consecration material. The sculpture shows natural wear and oxidation consistent with prolonged age and handling.

Iconography and Context

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.

Condition and Display

The bronze surface shows the tonal variation, patina and raised-detail wear described in the catalogue note. The 11 photographs document the sculpture from multiple angles, including the reverse and base.

Collector’s Note

A antique shan buddha with balanced display presence, combining its shan / northern myanmar–thailand borderlands | character with clearly readable sculptural detail.
