Catalogue Note

Dimensions: H 50 × W 25 cm
Weight: approx. 2 kg
Material: Carved hardwood with remnants of polychromy and gilding
Period: c. 1680–1720, Late Ayutthaya period
Origin: Thailand

An antique Thai wooden temple panel carved with a seated Buddha within a flame-shaped architectural niche.

The relief retains traces of red-toned polychromy and gilding. The surface shows extensive wear, cracking and losses, while the plain reverse preserves broad carving and tool marks.

Iconography and Context

The composed posture and restrained expression belong to the visual language of Buddhist devotional sculpture. Balance, stillness and clearly readable gestures allow the image to function both as a sacred object and as a focused sculptural presence.

Condition and Display

The carved carved hardwood with remnants of polychromy and gilding retains visible grain, tool-work and naturally varied colour. The 5 photographs document the carving, profiles, reverse and age-related surface character as part of the condition assessment.
