Catalogue Note

A compact Thai bronze Buddha seated in bhumisparsha mudra on a double-lotus throne. The strong silhouette, flame finial and surviving traces of gilded surface are characteristic of later Ayutthaya devotional bronzes.

Construction & Surface

The open underside retains old core material and an iron core support. Green, brown and red corrosion products are integrated into the surface, while protected areas preserve remnants of gold. These observations support traditional manufacture and age but are not presented as laboratory proof of an exact year.

Condition

Antique condition with worn gilding, mineral patina, oxidation and casting irregularities. The historical surface has been left intact.

Iconography and Context

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.

Condition and Display

Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 9 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.
