Catalogue Note

An antique Thai seated Buddha in gilt bronze, attributed to the late Ayutthaya / early Rattanakosin tradition and dating to the 18th or early 19th century. The 30 cm figure is shown in bhumisparsha mudra and retains areas of historic gilding, dark lacquer and aged copper-alloy patina.

Late Ayutthaya / early Rattanakosin form

The Buddha touches the earth with the right hand in bhumisparsha mudra, the gesture associated with Shakyamuni’s enlightenment. The slender body, flame-shaped finial and restrained throne combine features that continued from late Ayutthaya imagery into the early Bangkok period.

Gilt bronze and casting

The figure is hollow cast in bronze using a traditional lost-wax process. Protected recesses retain traces of gilding and darker lacquer, while exposed areas show natural wear and copper-alloy oxidation. The open underside preserves historic casting-core material.

Condition

Good antique condition with wear to the gilded surface, oxidation, casting irregularities and age-related marks. No modern restoration is asserted beyond what is visible in the photographic record.
