Catalogue Note
An antique Thai Buddha head cast in bronze and dating to approximately 1880–1920. The detached head retains a calm expression, tightly arranged hair curls and a naturally varied brown-green patina that gives the surface considerable depth.
Thai Buddhist form
The softly lowered eyes, refined nose, restrained smile and patterned hair derive from long-established Thai Buddha imagery. The proportions show Sukhothai-derived elegance within a later Thai sculptural tradition rather than being presented as an early Sukhothai-period work.
Bronze and patina
The surface shows historic wear, oxidation and subtle colour variation. The irregular interior and hand-finished exterior are consistent with traditional hollow bronze casting. Ultraviolet examination has also documented fluorescence on parts of the interior surface; this observation is recorded as a surface characteristic and is not used by itself as proof of age.
Condition
Good antique condition for a surviving sculptural fragment, with patina, oxidation and wear. The original body is no longer present.
