A heavy seated Thai Buddha in Rattanakosin style, with elongated proportions, a tall flame finial and a richly modelled double lotus base. Old gilding survives over a red underlayer and darker bronze surface.

Iconography

The right hand forms Bhumisparsha Mudra, the earth-touching gesture associated with the enlightenment of Shakyamuni.

Dating and condition

The sculpture is attributed to the 19th or early 20th century. The open underside retains old clay/sand core material. Surface wear, oxidation and rubbed gilding are visible throughout.

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.

Condition and Display

Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 11 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.
