Catalogue Note

This substantial 19th-century Thai bronze Buddha is modelled in a Sukhothai-inspired style associated with the Rattanakosin period. Seated in bhumisparsha mudra on a lotus base, the sculpture combines elegant Thai proportions with a dense, weighty casting and a layered olive-brown patina. At 47.5 cm high and 12.6 kg, it has a strong sculptural presence.

Form and iconography

The Buddha is shown seated with the right hand reaching toward the earth in bhumisparsha mudra, the gesture associated with the moment of enlightenment. The elongated silhouette, fine facial modelling, flame-shaped finial and restrained robe treatment reflect the enduring influence of classical Sukhothai imagery in later Thai Buddhist sculpture.

Bronze and surface

The figure is hollow cast in a copper-alloy bronze using a traditional lost-wax process. The open underside retains casting-core material, while the exterior shows an aged surface ranging from olive green to dark brown. Smoother areas on the knees and torso contrast with more protected patinated recesses.

Condition

Good historic condition with casting irregularities, surface wear, oxidation and patina consistent with age. Old felt pads are present on the underside. Please review the photographs carefully as part of the condition description.
