Catalogue Note

A monumental Tibetan Green Tara seated in a relaxed royal posture on an openwork double lotus throne. Her right leg extends forward, ready for compassionate action; the lowered right hand offers the Varada gesture of generosity, while the raised left hand holds a lotus stem. Further lotus flowers rise beside both shoulders.

The bodhisattva is richly adorned with a jeweled crown, large earrings, necklaces, armlets and anklets. Traces of original fire gilding survive in protected areas, while extensive handling, incense exposure and natural oxidation have produced the warm reddish-brown tones visible across the body.

Engraved floral, circular and geometric ritual marks cover the arms, thighs, back and lower body. The open underside reveals the large hollow-cast construction and the pierced structure of the lotus throne. Together with the ritual markings and devotional wear, these features reflect active Vajrayana use rather than decorative production.
