This Burmese bronze depicts Shakyamuni Buddha seated in meditation with the right hand lowered in Bhumisparsha Mudra, the earth-touching gesture associated with enlightenment.

The pedestal is richly decorated with elephants, a central figure and Wheel of Dharma motifs. The composed expression, elegant proportions and polished modelling follow the Mandalay sculptural tradition, while the natural patina gives the bronze a mature surface.

Iconography and Context

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.
