A substantial Mandalay-style Buddha with a warm gilt surface and coloured glass decoration. The image is seated in a classic devotional format and has the rich surface treatment associated with Burmese temple sculpture.

Iconography

The right hand forms bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture of enlightenment.

Condition

Age-related wear to gilding and glass decoration, darker exposed underlayers and normal wood movement. The sculpture is presented as an early 20th-century Burmese example.

Iconography and Context

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.

Condition and Display

The carved wood retains visible grain, tool-work and naturally varied colour. The 10 photographs document the carving, profiles, reverse and age-related surface character as part of the condition assessment.
