A hand-carved Mandalay Buddha with inset eyes, gilding and decorative glass mosaic. The warm surface and soft facial modelling are typical of early 20th-century Burmese devotional sculpture.

Iconography

The Buddha is seated in bhumisparsha mudra, the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni's enlightenment.

Condition

Age-related wear to gilding, lacquer and glass decoration with normal wood movement. The sculpture is presented as an early 20th-century Mandalay example.

Iconography and Context

Bhumisparsha Mudra is the earth-touching gesture associated with Shakyamuni calling the earth to witness his awakening. The lowered right hand turns the stable seated image into a direct reference to the moment of Enlightenment.

Condition and Display

The carved wood retains visible grain, tool-work and naturally varied colour. The 11 photographs document the carving, profiles, reverse and age-related surface character as part of the condition assessment.
