Weight: 3.4 kg
Material: Bronze with partial gilding
Period: c. 1950–1970
Origin: China
Subject: Guanyin seated on a guardian lion

Catalogue Note

A vintage Chinese bronze sculpture of Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, seated in a relaxed pose across the back of a guardian lion. The calm figure and powerfully modelled animal create a balanced composition that unites compassion with protective strength.

The robes preserve areas of warm gilding against the darker bronze of the face, hands and lion. Fine details include the high coiffure, jewellery, flowing garments and deeply worked mane. The surface has a naturally aged patina and wear consistent with age; some areas may have been cleaned or restored in the past.

Iconography and Context

Guanyin, Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig is the bodhisattva of compassion. Crown, lotus, vase and hand gestures vary by region, but the subject consistently embodies attentive mercy and aid.

Condition and Display

Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 10 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.
