A large bronze figure of Guanyin seated in lalitasana, the pose of royal ease. The sculpture was designed to sit on the edge of a table, cabinet or architectural ledge, allowing one leg to fall freely below the supporting surface.

Iconography

Guanyin is the East Asian form of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion. Here the figure is represented in an ornate crowned form with flowing robes and a calm, inward expression.

Signature and attribution

The drapery carries a cast cursive signature reading ‘Monet’. The exact maker or foundry has not been securely identified, so the signature is recorded without assigning the work to a known artist.

Condition

Dark brown patina with warmer rubbed highlights on exposed areas and normal age-related surface wear. The substantial weight gives the sculpture a stable presentation when correctly positioned.
