Object Details

Catalogue Note

Height: 28 cm | Weight: 5.15 kg | Material: bronze | Period: probably ca. 1900–1930

A compact but unusually heavy seated Buddha on a lotus base, cast in bronze and finished with a dark aged patina. The sculpture has previously been associated broadly with an India/Burma colonial-period context.

Iconography

The seated meditative format emphasises stillness and concentrated presence. The lotus base is the principal decorative element beneath the figure.

Attribution and condition

The precise regional origin remains uncertain, so no narrower school is claimed. The surface shows dark patina and normal age-related wear consistent with an early 20th-century devotional or decorative bronze.

Iconography and Context

The composed posture and restrained expression belong to the visual language of Buddhist devotional sculpture. Balance, stillness and clearly readable gestures allow the image to function both as a sacred object and as a focused sculptural presence.

Condition and Display

The bronze | surface shows the tonal variation, patina and raised-detail wear described in the catalogue note. The 11 photographs document the sculpture from multiple angles, including the reverse and base.
