Catalogue Note
This gilt bronze depicts four-armed Avalokiteshvara, known in Tibet as Chenrezig, seated in meditation on a double lotus base. The central hands are joined in Anjali Mudra, while the outer hands carry a lotus and prayer beads.
The ornate crown, jewellery and carefully modelled robes retain a warm golden patina. The hollow base and naturally aged surface are consistent with traditional Himalayan bronze casting.
Iconography and Context
Anjali Mudra joins the hands before the chest as a gesture of reverence, greeting and spiritual humility. In a kneeling figure, the gesture creates an especially focused image of devotion.
Condition and Display
Surviving gilding, darker recessed areas and wear on raised details create a layered surface. The 11 photographs document the remaining finish, patina, casting and base from multiple viewpoints.
